Affirmations

Have you ever heard that phrase, “your body hears everything your mind says”? It’s 100% true. But I would venture to say that it should be even more comprehensive, something like, “your mind, body, and spirit hear everything you say and everything you think.

As a past victim of verbal, emotional, and physical abuse, improving my own self-talk has been a huge step in recovering from those traumas and learning to love and forgive myself and others. And for me, the most effective tool for improving that self-talk has been the use of affirmations.

The idea behind why affirmations work is super simple: the more times you say or hear something, the more likely you are to believe it. That’s how emotional and verbal abuse work in breaking down a victim’s self-esteem until they’re unable and unwilling to fight back because they believe that everything the abuser is saying is the truth. So it stands to reason that using those same tactics for a positive, loving result should work as well—and they do!

The unfortunate part of human programming is that it takes way fewer repetitions of negative phrases than it does of positive ones for us to believe them, but it doesn’t mean that it can’t be done! Just as daily exercise, a healthy diet, drinking enough water, taking vitamins, and getting enough sleep are all acts of self-care that we employ regularly to maintain and even  improve our physical health, when practiced consistently as an act of self-care, affirmations can help us improve our spiritual, emotional, and mental health (and even our physical health as well)!

I challenge you to try this affirmation every day, it takes less than a minute. And after a month you might find yourself saying parts of it throughout the day, catching yourself in negative self-talk and correcting it with this simple act of self-love. And before you know it, you will start to reprogram yourself and actually BELIEVE the words you’re saying!

“I am happy. I am well. I am peaceful. I am whole. I am open. I am loved. I am safe. I am a miracle. I am capable. I am kind. I am enough. I am worthy. I am strong. I am divine. I love me.”
